Brett Kissel got by with a little help from his fans during his national anthem performance at Sunday (April 30) night’s NHL playoff game between the Edmonton Oilers and Anaheim Ducks.

The Canadian country star’s mic failed him before he even started singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” but fortunately he was able to rally the stadium to sing the song instead. The display of sportsmanship is particularly amazing since the game was being played in Edmonton, Alberta, with attendees performing their visiting rivals’ national anthem.

“Everybody bailed me out; I didn’t have a Plan B,” Kissel said. “It was pure relief, thinking like thank you, thank you, thank you, this is now becoming an amazing moment, that’s what I was thinking about because once they started singing I knew that something special was happening. And then I had the best view standing at center ice, holding up the mic, looking at everybody and pointing people out, it became very special.”
