Blake Shelton’s “God’s Country” took single of the year. The smash references Charlie Daniels Band’s “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” which won in this category 40 years ago.

Garth Brooks won entertainer of the year at the 53rd annual CMA Awards on Wednesday (Nov. 13) for a record-extending seventh time. No one else has won in this category more than four times. This brings Brooks’ career total of CMA Awards to 14.

Brooks wasn’t the only artist to make history, or at least make news, at the CMA Awards.
