Simon Cowell threw a curveball at America’s Got Talent contestant Hunter Price. And the country singer played it like a pro.

On the final night of Season 13 auditions, Price, a 25-year-old who hails from Georgia, started his performance with a cover of the Bryan Adams ubiquitous hit “(Everything I Do) I Do For You,” a song he’s belted out at karaoke for years.

So what was missing with Price’s performance, chimed Cowell. Something original. Something urgent. With some prompting (and the admission he wanted to “be like Taylor Swift“), Price hit the restart, retuned his guitar and hit a personal creation, “Left Behind.”

Later, Cowell praised Price as a “good songwriter” and his song for its “great melody,” and he pushed the contestant once more to reveal his true artistic self. What followed was an on-stage confessional. In the end, three of the judges liked what they saw.
