Apache County sheriff’s deputies are searching for a man in a stolen tractor trailer in the Vernon area.

Show Low police received a call Tuesday morning (Aug. 29) from Gilbert police asking them to be on the lookout for the tractor trailer out of Gilbert. Show Low police spotted the truck near the Best Western in Show Low and started surveillance on it.

According to Jim Molesa, chief deputy of the Navajo County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the vehicle apparently saw police watching him and took off on U.S. 60 through town, headed east toward Round Valley at high rates of speed, with Show Low police in pursuit. Navajo County sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit until it was determined that, in the interest of public safety, police needed to switch to a follow mode rather than a pursuit mode.

Molesa said after entering Apache County, the suspect reportedly turned south onto Apache County Road 3140, speeding through Vernon before turning onto U.S. Forest Service roads outside Vernon, with police still following as best they could. That prompted a temporary lockdown at Vernon Elementary School to keep students and staff safe. A deputy has been posted at the school as a precaution.

The suspect is still on the loose at this time.
